Alabama councilman rejects requests to resign after utilizing n-word in council assembly

The Alabama Democratic Get together requested Tarrant metropolis councilmember Tommy Bryant to resign after video of Monday’s assembly started circulating. Bryant advised CNN affiliate WVTM he isn’t going to step down.

CNN has reached out to Bryant, who’s White, for remark.

The council assembly was streamed dwell on town’s Fb web page Monday night. Bryant is seen within the video standing up whereas discussing quite a lot of points with Tarrant Mayor Wayman Newton, who’s Black.

Whereas chatting with councilmember Veronica Freeman, Bryant requested, “Do we now have a home n***er in right here? Can we? Can we? Would she please rise up?” This resulted in Freeman weeping and leaving the assembly and later coming again.

Bryant mentioned he was repeating one thing Newton mentioned about Freeman throughout government session.

“He mentioned it in a derogatory method, I mentioned it so folks would know what the mayor mentioned,” Bryant later advised WVTM.

“The mayor was being derogatory towards Veronica Freeman when he mentioned that.”

CNN has reached out to Newton for remark. The mayor has denied utilizing the n-word and advised al.com, “They’re making an attempt to show me for saying one thing I didn’t say. All of that was a political stunt that they didn’t do very effectively.”

He added that if he had used the phrase throughout a gathering with councilmembers, a recording would exist as a result of their conferences had been recorded, so advised reporters to “ask them to provide the video.”

Freeman was not obtainable for remark. Lawyer Bryan P. Winter, who represents Freeman, launched a press release saying, “The statements made on the Metropolis of Tarrant represent unconscionable racial discrimination and harassment. Such statements are deeply hurtful and completely unacceptable in our society.”

Wade F. Perry, the chief director of the Alabama Democrats, issued a press release Tuesday, saying Bryant is “racist” and “unfit to serve.”
